I. Getting Started

  • User Identities

At the very core of the HydraIRC client is how you identify yourself with the client. Once HydraIRC is installed and ran for the first time, a small pop-up box will appear asking if you want to create a User Identity. If you select "Yes", then the User ID entry form is revealed. Click on "New" to make a new User ID.

If you have accidently answered "No" to that question and you do not know how to get back to the identities editing screen then select Options -> Preferences from the toolbar and select Identities from the top of the list on the left of the Preferences dialog box.

    HydraIRC User Identity

Identity Description is merely the description given to that particular identity. This parallels with Identd Username. For example, you can have an identity set up for when you need to get to NBT-Drop for an NBT League Drop. All your settings and preferences will be saved under that identity. The description can read "For use when dropping for NBT" and your dentd Username can be "CC`Gohan."

Real Name and Username do not have to be truthfully answered (i.e., you can merely add in your callsign).

The Nick area is very important. The name you enter here will be the nickname you use once HydraIRC starts up. You can add as many as you like but only the first one that is not taken by someone else will be used.

Once this is complete, you are ready to log onto servers and join channels.

  • Logging Onto Servers & Channels The simplest way of logging onto servers is by typing /server server_name (usually irc.[address].com) in the text area.

    • Example: /server irc.netbattletech.com

From there, it is a matter of simply joining a channel, such as NBT-Social or NBT-Drop.

    • Example: /j nbt-drop
    • Example: /join #nbt-social

      • Note: Both /j and /join work, as well as prefacing the channel name with the pound symbol.

The final basic step left is to learn how to register a nickname.

  • Registering Nicknames

To register a nick on any server, simply type /msg nickserv register [email] [password]

    • Example: /msg nickserv register abc@123.com computerblue

      • Note: While the syntax to register a nickname is identical on any server, the actual registration is local to that server. So, if you register on NBT, the registration is for NBT only and your nick will not be registered with another server unless you register there as well (i.e., EFNet).

The email address can be real or made up. However, if you do lose the password, only the email address tied to the nickname can receive the password. Alternatively, one can opt to not use the nickname for 3 weeks, resetting its usage and allowing reregistration.

II. Commands

  • Auto-Login + Auto-Join Channel In the Options -> Preferences -> Command Profiles section, there should be two commands called "Network_OnLoggedIn" and "OnStartup.". For now, rename the first one to "irc.netbattletech.com_OnLoggedIn" and leave the second alone.

    HydraIRC Command Profiles

Now, in the "OnStartup" command text area, type the following:

    • /server irc.netbattletech.com

What this does is automatically connect you to the irc.netbattletech.com server on startup of the HydraIRC client rather than having to select "New Server" and the NBT server every time you start HydraIRC.

Next, in "irc.netbattletech.com_OnLoggedIn", place the following lines of text:

    • /msg nickserv identify [your password made from when you registered your nickname]
    • /j #nbt-social [or any other channel]

This automatically logs you in with nickserv, the nickname registration and tracking service, and joins the #NBT-Social channel. This combination can be done for ANY server, ANY login name and ANY channel.

  • Other Commands

These are commands that perhaps people will find useful while using HydraIRC.

  • Quit Message Override / Customization

Create a command called "Quit", or give it another preferred name, in theOptions -> Preferences -> Command Profiles section and in the text area type the following:

    • /quit [exit message]

When you use this command, /exec Quit, you will be disconnected from the server and the exit message will be whatever is placed in the "exit message" portion. Your message can be changed to whatever you please. Not only does this make the client more customizable but it also overrides HydraIRC's standard advertisement messages.

  • Away From Keyboard

Create a command called "AFK", or give it another preferred name, in theOptions -> Preferences -> Command Profiles section and in the text area type the following:

    • /window clear
    • /me is AFK
    • /nick [Your Nickname]_AFK
    • /audiomute on

This, first, clears the text window of any text, displays in the chat area that you are AFK, changes your nickname to reflect this status change and mutes the HydraIRC client only.

  • Be Right Back

Create a command called "BRB", or give it another preferred name, in theOptions -> Preferences -> Command Profiles section and in the text area type the following:

    • /window clear
    • /me will BRB
    • /nick [Your Nickname]_BRB
    • /audiomute on

Again, this clears the text area, marks that you will be right back, changes your nick to reflect it and mutes the client so that any sounds that may emit are muted (i.e., DCC transfer, general chat, private messages, etc.).

  • Back

Create a command called "Back", or give it another preferred name, in theOptions -> Preferences -> Command Profiles section and in the text area type the following:

    • /me is back
    • /nick [Your Nickname]
    • /msg nickserv identify [your password made from when you registered your nick]
    • /audiomute off

This particular command puts you as back, changes your nickname to your original nickname, identifies the nickname with nickserv so that you will not be altered to guest status and removes the audio mute setting
